Widely called the toughest footrace on earth

The Marathon des Sables crosses the Moroccan Sahara Desert in stages over about a week. The distance of each stage is only revealed the day before the start, but adds up to around 270km. Every runner carries their own food, clothes, cooking and sleeping kit for the whole race. Only water is handed out. The race crosses a shifting mix of open rocky plains, dry riverbeds, and massive sand dune systems like Erg Chebbi and the Ouzina dunes.

From Arctic winters to the Sahara

I’m Luka Brosius, a Belgian outdoor life (friluftsliv) student at HVL in Sogndal, Norway.

Over the last years I have been finding out how far body and mind can go, mostly in the cold. I organised and finished my own Ironman at 18, took 4th place in the international category of the Everest Marathon, and set records on two Arctic ski expeditions around Tromsø. Most of my time is still spent outside: climbing, ski touring and winter expeditions.

The Sahara is the other end of that scale. No snow, no shade, and 270 km with everything on my back. That is exactly why I want to run it, and why I want to show what it takes.

Self-organised Ironman at 18

3rd place at as-adventure 60 km

4th place at everest marathon

Planned and finished in Sandane, Norway. The film reached Belgian media and earned me local support and backing for extreme self-supported endurance projects.

60km ultra in Antwerp, Belgium tested heat resistance and mental fortitude.

Tested physiological limits under severe oxygen deficit and high heat in Nepals Himalaya mountains. Solidifying the relationship with climbing Managers,
